Analysis of item writing flaws (IWFs) evident in objective formats examination questions in federal college of education (technical) Asaba, Nigeria

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to ascertain IWFs contained in objective formats examination questions for assessment students the Nigeria Certificate Education (NCE) programme 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and first semester 2018/2019 academic sessions. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional design adopted which enabled researchers estimate prevalence (number cases) associated with constructed end-of-semester examinations. retrieved 57 question papers administered examinations centrally conducted College within period three sessions (2016/2017, 2018/2019). 19 common violations item writing principles were selected from literature used assessing quality questions. classified test items each into standard flawed categories such that if an is flawed, exact type flaw(s) (including options) recorded. Results: results showed short answer, multiple choice alternate response are types by lecturers; there a high rate violation rules most nature four frequently violated related irrelevant difficulty tended make or tasks more difficult than intended. Recommendations/Classroom Implications: management should organize seminar workshop at regular interval train update lecturers’ knowledge on construction skills tips.
